Hartland Landfill Mountain Bike Park in Mount Work Regional Park:

Enter at Hartland Landfill and you will find multi-use trails open to mountain biking on the east slope of Mount Work, separate from the main part of Mount Work Park. These trails cover a variety of terrain from moderate slopes to the most difficult grade for advanced mountain bikers. Use extreme caution, and be prepared for hazards or difficult sections on any trail. Come adequately prepared.

This is the best all-round mountain biking trail in Victoria. Trails are well marked and rated accordingly. The most technically challenging trails extend out from powerlines through fire roads and single track. Hartland is the busiest and most popular trail in Victoria. Victoria riders will tell you that the Hartland trails are the best overall course for cross-country.

HOW TO GET THERE:

FROM DOWNTOWN VICTORIA:

Go NORTH on Blanshard St. which will turn into the Pat Bay Highway(17). Take the Royal Oak Exit. TURN LEFT on Royal Oak Drive and go over Highway 17. Next, turn right at the 3rd traffic light onto West Saanich Road. Turn LEFT onto Hartland Road and follow it to the Harland Landfill gate. Just before the entrance to the Landfill, there is a parking lot on the RIGHT. You are there.

Hartland Road is about the 5400 block of West Saanich Road. This entrance is best if you are driving your vehicle out there!

FROM SWARTZ BAY:

Travel SOUTH on the Pat Bay Highway (17). Take the Airport turn off RIGHT, and go straight ahead following McTavish Road to West Saanich Road (17A). Turn LEFT at West Saanich Road and go south to Hartland Road. Turn RIGHT onto Hartland Roadn and follow it to the Harland Landfill gate. Just before the entrance to the Landfill, there is a parking lot on the RIGHT. You are there.

At the parking lot you will find washrooms and an area to wash your bike. Take the trail directly across the road from the parking lot and work your way under the power lines towards the forested hills. This area is full of trails with new ones being developed all the time.

If you are riding you bike out, the recommended entrance is at the fire hall on Woodridge Place. From downtown travel north on Douglas Street, turn Left on Burnside Road and keep following it until you are on West Burnside heading north. When you pass Tillicum Mall on your left, you will go under Highway 1. Just as you pass under the over pass, turn left onto West Burnside. You will pass the Foresty Centre, then McKenzie Avenue at the next light. Stay on West Burside. Eventually, you will cross Helmcken Road and get into a mor rural area. Continue on West Burside until you get to Prospect Lake road on your right. Head up winding Prospect Lake road until it forks at the horse farm where you go left onto Munns Road. After twisting and turning for about 3 km, you will come to the bottom of a hill you will see West Ridge Place where you need to turn right. Then take the next left onto WoodRidge stay on that till you reach the fire hall. If you see lots of No Parking Signs and a bunch of cars parked, you will know you are there.

The trails in this area are full of tight single tracks, with lots of roots, rocks, logs, drops and other surprises. Bring water and snacks to keep you going.
