|
Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site is located in Colwood which is on Victoria's West Shore. It is in the City of Colwood and there is good signage to direct you there. If coming from Victoria, take the Colwood turnoff and watch for signs. The first major turn is at Ocean Blvd. It is situated on the shores of Juan de Fuca Strait at the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour. It was built to protect the harbour in times of war. It is now a great park and place to visit, explore and enjoy.

Try out some of the gear |
The Fort was built in the late 1800s to defend Victoria and the the Naval Base in Esquimalt. The Fort has three gun batteries, underground magazines to store ammunition, command posts, guardhouses, living quarter and searchlights. There interpretive signs and audio-visual stations where you can learn about the history of the Fort. There are staff around in the summer to answer your questions and entertain you (see above).
The grounds are well kept, clean and there are a number of picnic tables should you want to extend your stay. The Fort is a great place to take photos of the Fisgard Light Station (which you can also explore). You can look across the the Olympic Mountains, over towards the naval base or back towards Esquimalt Lagoon which is a bird sanctuary. There is no shortage of photographic opportunities.

Fisgard Light Station which you can explore. |
Just off the Fisgard Light Station is an excellent place to Scuba dive. However you have to hike in your gear about 1/4 of a mile. You might want to consider bringing something you can use to transport your gear (like a wheel barrow). The shores around the light station are also a great place to kayak. When the tide goes out you can explore the tide pools around the station as well. There is a small entry fee to get into this Historic Site and when you enter you will be given a map of the site. This is one of the best attractions in Victoria and often overlooked because it is on the West Shore. Esquimalt Lagoon is also a great place to visit which is right next door. Esquimalt Lagoon is a bird sanctuary so you will see lots of sea birds while you are at Fort Rodd Hill and eagles and more.
