Instead of a trip south to Costa Rica or some other tropical country, you can drive just north of Victoria and immerse yourself in this tropical splendor at a small fraction of the cost. As you journey through these lush tropical and warm gardens you will have close encounters with exotic butterflies as the dart around the premises. They come in many dazzling colors and intricate patterns and there are about 35 species in the Garden at any one time. They may even light on your person, if you are lucky.
Having a butterfly land on your nose is akin to having a killer whale splash you with water. It is immensely good luck and it will tickle you fancy. They don't bite, so relax and enjoy the experience.
There are a number of great exhibits in the Gardens. There is an impressive collection of orchids, a carnivorous plant display, and a "Foods of the World" display, all of which will educate and inform you.
There are a wide variety of birds. For me the most outstanding are the South African Turocos and the beautiful pink flamingos.
Your education begins with a preview video, which is a great idea. If you enter the Gardens with some knowledge, you will see far more. Inside the garden, there is a naturalist available to answer any of your questions, so don't be shy, ask away!
Education plays a central role at Victoria Butterfly Gardens. Start with a video preview and then move on to our naturalists on site who will provide tours and answer questions about the wondrous life cycle of butterflies and moths. Hundreds of butterflies representing about thirty-five species are in our Gardens at any one time.
Enjoy your visit to Butterfly Gardens, you will be very glad you made it a stop on your visit to Victoria. Be sure to plan on spending lots of time there. In addition to the education you will get, they have a great gift shop to explore when you are done. If you are going to Butchart Gardens, you can easily fit both attractions in on the same day as they are so close together.
