in Port Renfrew include fishing, kayaking, hiking, beach walks, atv experiences,
spectacular views, camping, and more.
Botanical
Beach is located at the west end of the Juan de Fuca Trail and
it is truly one of the most spectacular places on the island.
The tide pools are large and I have seen everything from octopus
and anemones to sculpins and limpets. This place is a treasure
to discover. Be sure to check the tide as you will want to go their at low tide (less than 4 feet, the lower the better. Botanical Beach is a few kilometers south of Port Renfrew. When you get to the end of the road in Port Renfrew, turn left and follow the Road to Botanical Beach. There is a walk of about 20 minutes to get down to the water on a fairly good trail.
Another highlight of Port Renfrew is a side trip to the Red Cree Fir. This is supposed to be the largest Douglas Fir in the world, estimated to be between 700 and 1000 years old. The road is 4 wheel drive only or you can charter an ATV tour to this site. Do not take your car there! Ask locally for maps to the Red Creek Fir (The Port Renfrew and San Juan Valley Hiking Trails Map). Also, check locally for information for the hike into Avatar Grove to see some amazing trees.
You can now do the circle route from Victoria to Duncan to Port Renfrew and back to Victoria. This is an amazing side trip, well worth the effort.
Make sure that you stay in Cowichan Lake, then Port Renfrew, then Sooke or in reverse order so that you can appreciate what you will discover on this special route. It is not a one day trip, unless you want to be in your car most of the day.
