Alberni is approximately 1hours and 15minutes (84 km, 52 miles)
from Nanaimo. Port Alberni is the gateway to the Pacific Rim tourism
area and is situated at the head of a 22 mile long fjord, Alberni
Inlet. You can get to Port Alberni by Bus (Coach) from Victoria and from the BC Ferry Terminals at Nanaimo and Swartz Bay, just north of Sidney BC. Island

Alberni Attractions and Activities Port Alberni is an outdoor enthusiasts haven. Some of the best salmon fishing in the world takes place in the waters off of Port Alberni. In addition there is great hiking, diving, golf, high-gliding, swimming, boating and more. Climb the clock tower at Harbour Quay and view the city and then browse through the shops and stores below. Visit the Alberni Forest Information Centre and get a hands-on look at the forestry industry. Climb inside a 450 year-old cedar or watch a film. Paper Mill Tours are also available from May to September. Visit Stamp Fall Provincial park. From late July to November you can watch the salmon spawn. Camp at Stamp Falls or enjoy a day picnic. The park has some walking trails. Mt. Arrowsmith has s pectacular views from the summit. Check locally for directions. It is one of the highest viewpoints on the island at 2200 metres. This is quite a hike. Somass River Estuary at Shoemaker Bay is home to many different bird species many of which reside here year-round. Trumpeter swans, Canada's largest waterfowl arrive in November and stay until March. During the salmon runs, black bear feed along the shorline. There are some great trails in the Alberni Valley such as China Creek Trail (5km), Horne Lake Trail at 10k, Labour Day Lake Trail (6km), Log Train Trail (20km), and Rogers Creek Nature Trail (4.8km) Check locally for directions. For some real excitement go to Sproat Lake off Highway 4 West and Turn left at Sproat Lake Provincial Park and stay right. Turn left at Bomber Base Road. Here you will find the Martin Mars water bombers. If you are lucky you can see them practicing. Each bomber can drop 27,000 litres of water (6000 gallons). Check
out the Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery situated off Great Central
Lake Road, 18 km from Port Albernit on the Highway to Tofino.
They produce millions of chinook, coho salmon and steelhead trout.
