Lake is a summer recreation cottage area that has grown into a
commute community for many people working in Victoria. Shawnigan
Lake village is a weekend getaway for many Victorians. Shawnigan
Lake Village is well know for arts and crafts shows and it also
has an excellent, but small museum. The population of Shawnigan
Lake (circa 2005) is approximately 15,000. The E&N Railway line
runs by the east side of Shawnigan Lake and it was at Cliffside
that the last spike on the railway was placed. The railway is currently not in use. Shawnigan Lake
is an excellent venue for kayaks, canoes and is a favourite water
ski lake on Southern Vancouver Island.
Near the south end of Shawnigan Lake is Memory
Island Provincial Park. A short paddle will put you in
a great place to picnic, rest or watch the birds and wildlife.
This small, day-use only park provides quiet nature viewing and
picnicking on one of the only protected park islands found in
a major destination lake. This tiny island is sanctuary and habitat
for a variety of small mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, plants
and fungi. Memory Island is accessible by boat, canoe or kayak
from various points on Shawnigan Lake, including West
Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park. Shawnigan Lake Municipal
Beach is located on Renfrew Road on the north end of Shawnigan
Lake and it is a great place for young families to swim and picnic. Old Mill Park, located in Shawnigan Lake, has extensive industrial history and is a popular recreation place for families and nature enthusiasts. This park has many easy walking trails, an enclosed swimming area, a playground, picnic areas, and portable washrooms. To get there, go west off of Trans-Canada Highway onto Shawnigan Lake Mill Bay Rd. Take a left onto East Shawnigan Lake Rd. and a right onto Roadway Rd, then go left onto Recreation Rd. For a unique experience check out the nearby Merridale Cider Works at 1230 Merridale Road,

The road becomes Renfrew Road; follow it approximately 10 km. Turn right onto Glen Eagles Road, then right onto Shelby Road. There is a small parking area on the left. Look for an old rail bed, now part of the Trans Canada Trail, and follow to the Trestle.
To access the North Side of the Tresle, drive south from Duncan and turn right on Koksilah Road, following it through the small community of Cowichan Station and then under a narrow trail overpass. Make a left turn and follow
Riverside Road for 10 km. You will find signs directing you to the parking area at the end of the
road, only 300 m. from the trestle. There are viewpoints along the trestle where the impressive
supporting structure can be viewed. You can bike, hike or horseback ride on all the trails.
